The company's original name is L.A.B. Productions, Inc. The L. A.B. represents the initials of my brother’s name, Lehman Alexander Beneby, the founder of the company. Lehman was an on- and off-Broadway theater actor and musician for many years before he wrote his own play and started producing it. When he died an untimely death in February 2000, I was devastated but found consolation when I decided to continue his company and his legacy in 2005, producing his play in different venues.
In 2011, I discovered an opportunity to become a Supplemental Education Services (SES) vendor with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) to provide academic tutoring to M-DCPS' Title 1 schools. Thankfully, M-DCPS accepted our application to tutor reading. We provided services for two years until the state of Florida pulled the funding from the Title 1 office. After the closure of the SES program, I continued with the desire to provide tutorial services to the community. So I began to tutor students on my own while still employed in full-time work in different capacities as an educator.
Now that I am retired, I am following my dream to have a tutorial company that I build from the ground up. I have progressed to where I have now employed 10 tutors to provide reading and math tutoring 2-3 hours a week to over a dozen students thus far. I am motivated to demonstrate that it is "better late than never" to follow your heart.
